What is Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC)?
LARC is a contraceptive method that
- works for months or years
- you don’t have to remember to take or use them regularly
- is very effective at preventing pregnancy
- can be removed at any time if you want to stop or try for a baby
LARC includes methods like the implant and coil.
Types of LARC Methods
- Implant: A small rod placed under the skin of the upper arm that releases progestogen for up to 3 years. It’s more than 99% effective to prevent pregnancy.
- Intrauterine Device (IUD/Copper Coil): A small T-shaped plastic and copper device placed in the womb, lasting 5–10 years. IUD’s with more copper is more than 99% effective to prevent pregnancy.
- Intrauterine System (IUS/Hormonal Coil): A similar device to the IUD is a small T-shaped plastic device placed in womb that releases progestogen, lasting up to 5 years. It is more than 99% effective to prevent pregnancy.
Why your views matter
Your input on this survey is valuable for the council and our partners. We want to make sure contraception services work for everyone in our community- and your voice is essential in helping us do that. By sharing your experiences and views, you will help us improve access, provide clearer and more relevant information, and shape services around what people really need. Your feedback will also help us work more closely with clinicians, GPs, clinics, and partner organisations to deliver more joined-up care and a better overall patient experience. Whether you have used contraception or not, your perspective truly matters.
