What is a School Street?

A ‘School Street’ is a measure introduced to offer a proactive solution for school communities to tackle pollution, congestion, and road safety issues caused by cars used for the school run. It can also improve health, wellbeing and community cohesion.

It creates a pedestrian and cycling zone which limits motor vehicle access. This means the roads immediately surrounding a school are closed to motor traffic at agreed times but remain open to pedestrians, cyclists, and authorised vehicles. The School Street operates on Mondays to Fridays in term time during a school’s drop-off and pick-up times, for approximately one hour in the morning and approximately one hour in the afternoon, normally with volunteer marshals operating barriers.
